Benefit

The purpose of IREN2 is to investigate the economic and technological benefit of novel decentralized grid structures and their operational strategies. The insights of the IREN project opened up new areas of research and development, where a well-established project team and pre-existing infrastructure ensure good project progress in IREN2.

The main goals of the project are: integration of operational strategies and markets, showing the feasibility of micro-grids with islanding capabilities and micro-grids as topological power plants. Micro-grids and their decentralized approach can pose a disruptive innovation that has the potential to ensure supply safety in the presence of a significant share of renewable energy sources in a cost-effective manner. Novel grid services, that can be provide by future topological power plants, should enable the distribution grid operator to abstain from a conventional warm reserve.

Siemens AG indents to prepare products and solutions for the German and international market. The Allgäuer Überlandwerk GmbH will advance their developments in grid technology for the Energiewende and explore new business opportunities in this context. IDKOM Networks GmbH indents to align their service and solution portfolio to this emerging market. The installed electrical components and control equipment can be used for research projects beyond the lifetime of the project. The university partners expect a demand for research and development beyond the lifetime of the project.
